Hi, I'm Sophie! I'm a social media producer and podcaster based in Minneapolis and NYC.

About Me

My background is in social media, and I am passionate about all-things Internet culture. I run the meme page @joan.of.arca, where I create and curate memes for 150k+ followers. I am fascinated by how Gen-Z interacts with the Internet, and I write about this topic in my free time on my Substack blog. I also co-host the weekly comedy and news podcast, Based News Network, where I've interviewed culture critic Rayne Fisher-Quann, hyperpop star Chase Icon, and Princess Poppy of RuPaul's Drag Race.

In the summer of 2022, I interned at Chegg Inc. at the NYC office, creating social media graphics and writing captions for the Chegg Life, Chegg's publication and newsletter that helps young adults navigate finance, careers, and mental health. Because Chegg Life is a newer addition to the Chegg brand, I helped shape Chegg Life's developing social media strategy. At Chegg, I became familiar with Canva and Photoshop, and I continuously work to improve my visual design skills through courses at my university as well as through freelance and personal projects.

I am excited to graduate from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities with a B.A. in history and a B.A. in strategic communications in 2024.

Meet @Netty_Mac, TikTok’s Queen of Karaoke

The devil works hard, but @netty_mac works harder. With nearly 18,000 followers and 495,000 likes on TikTok, @netty_mac has established herself as an icon in the online LGBTQ+ community by covering decidedly-queer music. Her version of Ayesha Erotica’s “Literal Legend,” which amassed hundreds of thousands of views, blew me away. I especially enjoyed her enthusiasm, delivering the words with such confidence and style. I sent a message to Netty on TikTok, not expecting anything, but was surprised

Why Among Us Parodies Will Always Be Funny

If you reside on the same side of the Internet as I do, you’re probably tired of hearing about Among Us. The multiplayer game produced by Innersloth took the Internet by storm in 2020 and generated tons of memes. The premise of Among Us is fairly simple. As stated on the official webpage, “crewmates work together to complete tasks before one or more Impostors can kill everyone aboard.” In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Among Us helped people connect, whether through memes or playing the gam

Normalize Lip-Syncing-For-Your-Life-Again

As another All Stars season draws to a close, it’s time for RuPaul’s Drag Race to rethink its lipstick-elimination format and let the queens lip-sync-for-their-lives again.

In 2016, All Stars 2 premiered with a shocking twist: instead of RuPaul, the winning queen of each episode would eliminate a competitor in the bottom by selecting a lipstick marked with that queen’s name. This change in format presented new opportunities for queens to showcase their talents. Contestants whose performances in
